“Students from all over the country, from diverse background and different age groups come for this conference. It is our responsibility to provide them a platform where they can voice their opinion,” said Shruti Chopra, Secretary General of the GLC-MUN committee. There were various committees under the Model United Nation conference which looked after various issue faced by the global world. For instance, the Security Council had taken up the Darfur issue. The combination of decades of drought, desertification, and over population are a few factors responsible for the Darfur conflict, which started in February 2003. At a time when the Copenhagen Summit is the topic of discussion, delegates from the Economic and Social Council have made a point to address global warming and global sustainable development. The other committees include the Human Rights Council and the legal committee. One of the topics of the Human Rights Council is alienation of land which refers to the acquisition of land from customary land owners for private or governmental purposes, either for its own use or for private development requiring mortgages or other forms of guarantees.

The second topic under this council becomes extremely important for us as Indians. The second topic being the Rights of Indigenous People in developing countries where in the delegates will work towards recognizing special measures to be taken to protect the rights of these people.

One of the most significant and complex committee is the legal committee. This committee deals with the Intellectual Property Rights that are legal rights that are granted to a person for any creative and artistic work, for any invention or discovery, or for any literary work or words, phrases and symbols or designs for a stipulated period of time.

This year the Government Law College is also holding a panel discussion along with Child Rights and You (CRY) on Human Rights. The main aim of this panel discussion is to make people realise the lesser-known human rights violations that occur in the world today and their impact and prevalence in India. This panel discussion hopes to provide the required impetus to the audience present to give serious thought to the issues at hand and an active part in dealing with them.

The chief guest for the opening ceremony was Paul A. Folmsbee, US General Counsel, who is also a wellknown diplomat in international relations. “We need solutions to our problems. I see hope in these young minds. President Obama said that leaders arise when many people come together. And this is what I see here,” said Mr Folmsbee who interacted with the young students.
