Anecdotes of the Great
WHILE having lunch with famed photographer Yousuf Karsh and his wife after a photo session one day, Neil Armstrong asked the couple about their various travels. "But Mr Armstrong," Mrs Karsh interjected, "you've walked on the moon! We want to hear about your travels."
"Yes," Armstrong replied with a frown, "but that's the only place I've ever been."
[Neil Armstrong (August 5, 1930) is a former U.S. astronaut noted for his command of the Apollo 11 mission, during which he became the first person in history to walk on the moon (July 20, 1969).]
Factoids
- Some historians say that tennis was a courtyard ball game invented by 11th or 12th century French monks while the word 'tennis' was derived from the French word 'Tenez!' meaning 'take this', which the monks would yell as they served the ball.
- Rich aristocrats modified their courtyards into indoor courts and developed gloves and then bats to hit the ball made of cork wrapped in string or cloth and later, leather.
- The word 'racquet' evolved from the Arabic word for palm of the hand, rahat.
- 'Deuce' comes from deux le jeu, meaning "to both is the game" (that is, the two players have equal scores), while 'love' may come from French l'oeuf (the egg), a reference to the egg-shaped zero symbol.
Who said that?
