04, 1776: U.S. declares independence from Great Britain.
06, 2006: The Nathula Pass between India and China, sealed during the Sino-Indian War, re-opens for trade after 44 years.
06, 1892: Dadabhai Naoroji elected as first Indian MP in the British House of Commons.
09, 1877: First lawn tennis tournament at Wimbledon begins.
10, 1806: Vellore Mutiny takes place, the first instance of a mutiny by Indian sepoys against the British East India Company.
11, 2006: 209 people killed in a series of train bombings in Mumbai.
13, 1974: India's first ODI v England at Headingley under the captaincy of Ajit Wadekar.
14, 1789: French revolutionaries storm the Bastille fortress signalling the start of the French Revolution.
18, 1947: King George VI signs Indian Independence Bill.
25, 1978: Louise Joy Brown, world's first "test tube baby", conceived via in vitro fertilization (IVF) born in Manchester (UK).
25, 1997: K.R. Narayanan sworn in as India's 10th president and the first Dalit to hold this office.
25, 2007: Pratibha Patil sworn in as India's first woman president
27, 1921: Canadian scientists Frederick Banting and Charles Best successfully isolate insulin for the first time at the University of Toronto.
29, 1958: NASA established.

focuses attention on the urgency and importance of population issues.

commemorates the first landing on the moon in 1969.

Anecdotes of the Great
WHILE having lunch with famed photographer Yousuf Karsh and his wife after a photo session one day, Neil Armstrong asked the couple about their various travels. "But Mr Armstrong," Mrs Karsh interjected, "you've walked on the moon! We want to hear about your travels." "Yes," Armstrong replied with a frown, "but that's the only place I've ever been."
[Neil Armstrong (August 5, 1930) is a former U.S. astronaut noted for his command of the Apollo 11 mission, during which he became the first person in history to walk on the moon (July 20, 1969).]
