So Let's Do It!
Imagine a scenario wherein we have all the world-class facilities but no energy to run them. We will have people standing in long queues for fuels, people stranded at the airports and top floors of skyscrapers, and in the worst of all scenarios we will have nations fighting each other for energy and natural resources. If this sounds absurd and weird now, remember, it won't be too far for us to experience them, given the kind of depletion of energy sources we are indulging in! Given India's growing energy demands and limited domestic fossil fuel reserves, the country has to move cautiously so as to avoid energy deficiency. About 70% of India's energy generation capacity is from fossil fuels, with coal accounting for 40% of India's total energy consumption followed by crude oil and natural gas at 24% and 6% respectively. And in the years to come India's dependence on energy imports is expected to exceed 53% of the country's total energy consumption. Hence, we need to use as much alternative and renewable energies like solar energy, tidal energy, wind energy, hydro energy as possible to save the precious fossil fuels. The more energy we save today the better for the future of our environment and our life. The culture of use and throw has to be replaced with the 3R's, i.e. Reuse, Reduce and Recycle so as to conserve the energy reservoir for a better tomorrow. The power to act is in your hands. In the lead story this month Power to the People, Bittu Saghal highlights a few practical ways to save energy in our everyday life. Further, recognizing the role of youngsters in saving energy, THE TEENAGER TODAY, for its annual national event - TEEN OF THE YEAR - has rightly chosen the theme 'Save Energy' for discussion and national debate. Here is an opportunity for each of you to do your share and be counted. Log on to our website teenoftheyear.in for more details about the event. It is said, there was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody would not do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done. The time to act is NOW. You and I can do it! So let us do it! ![]() |
