Use baking soda and vinegar to create an awesome chemical reaction!

What you’ll need

  • Baking soda (about 3-4 tablespoons)
  • Vinegar (about 1/2 cup)
  • A small, empty bottle
  • A few drops of liquid dishwashing detergent
  • Modeling clay
  • Funnel
  • Red food colouring
  • Old newspapers to clean up the mess!

What you do

  • Use the clay to make a volcano around the bottle. Leave the area around the top of the bottle open and don't get any clay inside the bottle. You can decorate the volcano with little twigs, leaves, etc.
  • Put a few drops of red food colouring into about half a cup of vinegar and keep aside.
  • Using the funnel, put 3-4 tablespoons of baking soda into the bottle. Then add a few drops of liquid dishwashing detergent and about a half cup of water.
  • Using the funnel, pour the vinegar mixture into the bottle (then quickly remove the funnel). Your volcano will erupt immediately!

What happened?

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is a base while vinegar (acetic acid) is an acid. When they react together they form carbonic acid which is very unstable, it instantly breaks apart into water and carbon dioxide, which creates all the fizzing as it escapes the solution.
