I am a B.Com student. I would like to know more about careers in banking and the institutions that offer these courses. Is there a good scope in this field? Recently I heard about a course called CBM from ICFAI. Please give me some more information about this.

Banking is one of the fastest growing areas of the economy, and demand for experienced bank managers is expected to remain strong in the years to come. Also, with the entry of foreign banks job opportunities in this high profile sector have grown by leaps and bounds. But the competition is also high. Today, banking has become a business, and banks are looking for more aggressive sales and marketing-oriented people, particularly people with well-developed customer service skills and good computer skills. To enter this field, graduation in any discipline from a recognised university is the minimum eligibility. Reserve Bank of India, State Bank of India and all Nationalized Commercial Banks conduct separate all India examinations and interview for the selection of bank officials. These examinations are highly competitive and require intense preparation in order to get through. Once selected, the officers are on probation for two years, and are put through on-the-job training in various departments to have a feel of variety of functions of the bank. Most foreign and private banks prefer to take MBAs, MFCs, Chartered Financial Analysts and CA's with some experience. Often they recruit directly from the reputed management institutes like Indian Institutes of Management through campus selections. Some institutes offering specialized courses in banking are:

  • Alagappa University, Karaikudi (www.aluniv.org)
  • Annamalai University, Annamalai Nagar (http://annamalaiuniversity.ac.in/)
  • Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh (www.amu.ac.in)
  • Barathidasan University, Tiruchirapaili (www.bdu.ac.in)
  • Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi (www.ignou.com)
  • Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak (www.mdurohtak.com)
  • Manipur University, Imphal (www.manipal.edu)
  • M S University of Baroda, Vadodara (www.msub.edu)
  • Ravishankar University, Raipur (www.rsuniversity.com)
  • Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati (www.svuniversity.in)
  • National Institute of Bank Management (NIBM), Pune (www.nibmindia.org)
  • Centre for Advanced Financial Studies, Institute for Financial Management and Research, Chennai (www.ifmr.ac.in)
  • Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi (www.ignou.ac.in) Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India University, Tripura (www.iutripura.edu.in) offers a CBM (Certified Bank Manager) programme, which covers the areas of money, banking and financial services, banking laws and regulations, credit, treasury, risk management, and banking strategy. It is based on self-study and examinations. However, one doesn't necessarily have to do a course in banking to get a bank job. But it surely helps for the future promotions. Some exams like Certified Associate of Indian Institute of Bankers (CAIIB) also help one rise from one scale to another.

I am currently doing M.Sc. in Earth Science. Please provide information about the job and also further studies.

    Sonia Fernandes / Salcete, Goa

Earth Science is the study of the Earth, its structure, its processes, its history, and the history of its plant and animal inhabitants. These scientists examine rocks and minerals in order to formulate and test theories on natural processes affecting the earth and to explore for mineral resources. They may also study fossil remains of animals and plant life and observe the flow of fluids and gases through rocks to determine the ages and rates of change of various parts of the earth's crust, as well as the possibility of oil and gas deposits. Some scientists teach and conduct research in academic settings; others are involved in research, exploration, and engineering programmes in the private sector. Most geologists divide their time between field and laboratory work, data analysis, and office duties. Out-of-doors, they collect rock samples and fossils, measuring the strata, and gather other types of information to be used in the preparation of reports and maps. Once the field work is completed, the samples and other data that have been collected are usually taken to the laboratory for more detailed study. Then they write reports and raft maps and diagrams to illustrate the results of their studies. Often, geologic work is good detective work. That's why it is important to be inquiring, observant, patient and self-motivated. A Ph.D. is a minimal requirement for university teaching and research. The demand for earth scientists has steadily increased so that competent geologists, mineralogists, paleontologists, oceanographers, and geophysicists now are employed on the staffs of large corporations, small consulting firms, in government departments, the armed forces, and for teaching and research in universities, colleges, and research centres. You may go for specialization after post graduation. Some institutes are:

  • Centre for Earth Science Studies, Akkulam, Thiruvananthapuram (www.cessind.org)
  • Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad (www.ismdhanbad.ac.in)
  • Indian Institute of Geomagnetism, Mumbai (http://iigm.res.in/)
  • Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehra Dun (www.wihg.res.in)
  • Geological Survey of India Training Institute at various places (www.gsi.gov.in/gsiti.htm)
