Indoor Rain

Create a little indoor rain in a jar with this easy experiment.

What you’ll need

  • Jar with lid
  • Hot water
  • Ice cubes

    What you do

Put a small amount of hot tap water in the jar.
Place the lid upside down on top of the jar.
Put several ice cubes inside the lid.

    What happened?

The cold lid causes the moisture in the warm air inside the jar to condense and form water droplets on the lid top inside the jar. This is the same thing that happens in the atmosphere. Warm, moist air rises and meets colder air high in the atmosphere. It condenses, turns into water vapour, and rains!
