A day in the life of a

Placement Consultant

A placement consultant is surely not a glamorous job title, surely not as fun as a job in the airlines you might think. No buddy, you're wrong! There's plenty that goes into a placement consultant's domain. You could try if you love the drive you get or you can say it's the sense of achievement you feel once you place a candidate in an organization or fill a position in your current organization. You can term it as the love for targets.

Why become a placement consultant?

  • If you love solving problems, head hunting could be one option as it is a technique used by recruiters in order to source candidates for a given position/vacancy that's quite difficult to close.
  • If you are good at coordination, because you need to do a lot of it.
  • If you are bubbling with creativity, as in certain cases, especially when closing senior position, you need to use unconventional and creative techniques in order to fill the vacancy.

What does it take to be placement consultant?

You could be a graduate from any stream, wanting to do at least something in HR…believe me that's how a lot of "people" or I could better put it as "professionals" started their careers. An MBA in Human Resource Development might also help.

How do you go about it?

You could start by working for an established placement consultant agency. Try to understand the different processes used and learn the techniques that are required like method of selection, methods for interviewing, types of interview, scientific selection methods etc.

And what can it lead to?

You can end up either heading the talent acquisition (a nice fancy word for recruitment) department in a large corporate and you're sure to earn a lot! Or, start out on your own, building your own business and being your own boss, but this road might not be the easiest.

At the end of the day, just remember one thing: "Life is what you make of it". So take your own decisions but take responsibility for the outcome as well.
