As I’m a student of Std XI need to study very hard but as I don’t get the time for self-study I choose to study at night. My problem is that when I start studying in the night I feel very tired and sleepy so I cannot concentrate on my studies, although I am not tired and I have slept well. What should I do to increase my concentration and not feel tired?
Anshul Bansal (Age 15) / Agra
Dear Anshul,
Night is the time to sleep! If you want to study till late at night, you have to sleep in the afternoon or evening for a short while to feel fresh and alert. Also, do not have a heavy dinner. It will make you feel more dull and sleepy.
Y ou need to sleep for a minimum of 6-8 hours everyday. In spite of this if you are feeling more sleepy and tired you need to get yourself more organised. Sleep for 5-6 hours at night but take a nap for one hour in the afternoon or evening. Make a time table for homework and self-study (learning). And stay disciplined and focused in following the timetable. You will have to gather a lot of will power. You have to fight it out. Don’t say I can’t do it. That way you will never be able to do it. You have to push yourself to the limit to achieve what you want. Say I CAN and I WILL.
Don’t sit for hours together with your books if your concentration span is less, take a short break for 5 minutes every hour. During this break go out for a walk, do some physical activity or stand at the window. Please do not read anything or watch television.
Have small and frequent meals. Have lots of fruits and salads. Have some dry fruits daily.
Take this Homoepathic Medicine (Biochemic): Five Phos 6x 4-4-4 x 3 months
I want to increase my weight

Kamal Nikhurpa (Age 18) / Haldwani
Dear Kamal,
A person like you is called an ectomorph. It is a genetic body type. Your body is like a burning furnace. It keeps consuming all the calories that you eat even at rest. It is important for you to have seven meal patterns per day. That means you should eat small meals every 3 hours which may be as small as a fruit or dry fruits or a sandwich or juice or milk, etc. besides breakfast, lunch and dinner. Moreover, each meal should be rich in carbohydrates, i.e., cereals, fruits, pulses, oats, rice, potatoes, bananas etc.
More than proteins, your requirement of carbs should be fulfilled.
How can I get smooth skin?
For the past 2 years I had been suffering from pimples. After consulting several doctors I’ve finally got rid of them, but at the cost of my skin texture. The pimples have left deep scars and holes on my face. I also have a lot of blackheads even though I wash my face at regular intervals. How can I regain the smoothness of my skin and get rid of the holes and marks? I’ve tried a number of home remedies like applying aloe vera, but my skin does not seem to agree with it. I feel really depressed when I look at my face in the mirror, because I had a great skin earlier. Please help me.
Tanya (Age 19)
Dear Tanya,
I don’t think any of the acne treatments would damage the skin texture. It gets damaged due to uncontrolled and or untreated acne. Or unless you have tried some stuff at home or in beauty parlours.
Acne marks generally stay on and take a very long time to go. Once you stop getting acne, slowly and steadily the marks will start disappearing. As regards the deep scars and holes (pits) they tend to stay on. With age slowly they will get better. In some people they go off completely, in some people they stay on.
The pigmentation (discolouration) associated with the scars can definitely be reduced to a very great extent. Have a healthy and vitamin-rich diet consisting of a lot of fruits and salads. Use a sunscreen lotion each time you go out in the sun. Take Vitamin E and Vitamin C supplements for about 3 months. Start exercising — this will help to bring on a good glow to your skin and make it look healthy.
Consult a good skin specialist. He/she may recommend some procedures like chemical peels or micro-derma-abrasions. These will help to further reduce the scars.
You may take this homoeopathic medicine: Silicea 6x (bio chemic) 4-4-4 x 3 months.

I look fat
I’m 16, height 5’8”. In the recent months I’ve gained a lot of extra kilos. I’m 70 kg at present and I look fat. I’ve become very lethargic too. Even a little physical work results in an unignorable pain in my knee-joints. I cannot even do one push-up while most of my friends can cross 20. What should I do?
Shobhit Singh / Jaipur, Rajasthan
Dear Shobit,
At this age even if you are 70 kg, you should not be experiencing any knee pains. I would recommend that you see an orthopaedic doctor and get yourself examined. As long as your knee pains exist do not exert too much. Once that has been taken care of, you may begin any physical activity to start reducing body fat. Keep a real close check on the kind of food you eat. Foods like soft drinks, ice-creams, chocolates, fried foods, papads, pickles, pizzas, burgers, etc. are not only high in calories and make you gain fat but also do not give you any nutrition. Because of this, the muscles around the weight-bearing joints like knees and back get weak and pain. Please take very good care of your food and consult a good nutritionist to ensure you are not heading towards problems which go with you while you grow up.
