Should there be a dress code in colleges?

Colleges should definitely have a dress code for their students. I myself come from a college where there is a uniform for students of each of the courses offered. Though initially I found the idea of wearing a uniform to college quite unsettling, I’ve got used to it now. I strongly support the idea of colleges having a dress code for its students for the main reason that students who are not so well off are not under constant pressure to keep up, in terms of dressing styles, with their companions who are better off. And in any case, college is not the place to show off the latest in fashion!!!

My opinion might stun everyone but I believe there should not be a dress code in Indian colleges! It is universally accepted that a dress code in colleges will maintain the balance between a rich student and the less privileged one, but is anyone stopping students from bringing the latest Nokia or Samsung handsets or the latest MP3 or MP4s to colleges? I’ve noticed that students between the gap of two classes immediately take out their latest handsets or other objectionable items and show them off to their classmates under the desks or in the toilets! Generally, in urban colleges this gap between the two periods is considered as the ‘AGREEMENT PERIOD’ as majority of students, specifically boys, exchange CDs, latest video clippings etc. Nowadays even the girls are not lagging behind as they tattoo their hands or their nape (back of neck) with a dragon or other design deteriorating their whole persona! Moreover, India is a land of diversified culture so if students are allowed to wear ethnic dresses (without ornaments) then it would be a better option! By doing so they will keep alive their culture, otherwise khadi dresses can be the second option.

I think there should be no dress code in colleges as it is a direct attack on a girl’s simple right of wearing what she wants to. Rules could be made in order to avoid revealing dresses for sure. Youth is the only age when everyone likes to flaunt funky dresses. Most youngsters are well aware of the difference between party outfits and casual ones. School life is more than enough to keep them clad in one uniform. Putting dress codes even in colleges is only a kind of lenient extension to that. Exposure and imitation of celebrities could be avoided by framing some simple code of behaviour instead of a dress code.

In my opinion there should be a dress code in colleges. I know there may be many who might not agree with me. There is always a dress code in schools, then why not in colleges? I feel dress code is necessary for school or colleges where the students will have their own identity. Even with proper dress they look smart and dynamic in their age. A dress code in institutions and colleges is a good system because the main purpose of education is helping a person to achieve his goal in life. A dress code makes all students equal in that institution. Nobody can differentiate who is rich or poor. Even some companies in India follow a dress code. When adults can follow the rules why can’t students in colleges follow? We now have a regular colour code for the school bus so that it becomes easy to locate if some mishaps happens. The same applies for the dress code for a student. It helps to identify the student from the general public. Instead of concentration on studies some students are interested on other activities such as wearing costly dresses daily. This will create a sense of inferiority in poor students, which in turn upsets their concentration on studies.

I strongly feel that there should be a dress code in colleges. I fully agree that college goers are mature enough to decide the clothes they wish to wear. However, keeping in mind that schools and colleges are the ‘temples’ of learning, I think that a proper system of dress code can surely help to avoid unpleasant and awkward situation in education institutions. The attire of female students as well as of male students should be a subject of regulation. At last, I feel that the introduction of UNIFORMS in colleges (as many of the colleges and universities have already done) can prevent undesired incidents on the college campus as well as create uniformity and equality among students.

Most of the teenagers in school think that colleges are cool just because they do not have to wear uniforms but they are wrong. By wearing uniforms in school parents feel safe that their children can be identified by people who could help them out in case the situation demands it. Students in colleges nowadays prefer bunking classes and going out with their friends and they cannot be noticed because of their clothes whereas if they had a dress code they can be easily spotted and this can also prevent bad incidents which take place with girls especially. So I prefer that there should be a dress code in colleges, too.
