Nail care for teens, both girls and boys, is important. Not only does it say a lot about your attention to personal grooming, but proper care can prevent painful problems. Make your nail tips shine with these simple dos and don’ts for your fingernails and toenails.

Neat Nails

  • Wash around and under your nails every day. Dip an old toothbrush into warm, soapy water. Polish over and under nails.

  • Make your nails look nice and even. If you find that some of your nails are super long, while the others are broken-off, simply trim or file them back to match.

  • Fingernails are not tools. Do not scratch, pick or pry at objects with them, or you will quickly find them broken and damaged.

  • Manicure your nails regularly, trimming them once a week. When filing your nails, always work in the same direction, as sawing back and forth can cause weak spots in your nails and cause them to break.

    Nail Facts
Fingernails grow about two times faster than toenails.
It doesn’t hurt to cut your nails because the nail is dead.
The paler half moon shape on the bottom part of the nail
    is called the lunula.
The slowest growing nail on the hand is the thumbnail.
The fastest growing nail is on the middle finger.
In the olden days in China, rich and important people
would let their fingernails grow really long to show that
they did not need to do any work.
  • Keep your cuticles whole. They protect your growing nails from infection and bacteria and should be left as they are. The best way to treat cuticles is to push them back with a cuticle stick.

  • Don’t use too much nail polish or nail polish remover. While some people claim that polish is a great way to look after your nails as it increases the strength of the nail, in the long run, polish robs nails of air and moisture that they need to grow strong.

  • Cut nails straight across or into a rounded shape. If you cut them too short, the very tender nail bed can be exposed. This will soon be covered with your growing nail, but the fingertip can be really sore for a while.

  • It is best to cut toenails after you have had a bath or a shower as the nails will be softer and easier to cut. Cut them straight across and keep them short.
