MUSIC REVIEW
3 WORDSCheryl ColeUK powerhouse girl band Girls Aloud's Cheryl Cole has taken a brief break from her pals to embark on a solo outing. 3 Words just about manages to come off with a neat well-polished pop album, obviously with a lot of help from all her friends, most noticeable among them being Black Eyed Peas' mix-master William Adams aka will.i.am who produces five tracks here (three tracks featuring him include 3 Words, Heaven and Boy Like You.)will.i.am has made his presence felt here and good for Cole; it's the best thing for the album. The highlights include Parachute with an interesting marching drum beat and a mid-tempo piano melody playing around and Cole growling softly. Stand Up, a disco-influenced piece, has a clubby Euro feel. Make Me Cry is another dance-infused piece, a kind of boogie-boogie track. In Boy Like You she excels with will.i.am co-versing the track. The record-breaking single (in the UK) Fight For This Love is a neat pushed-up track that oozes energy and melody with a neat acoustic guitar score. will.i.am also lends his 2008 hit Heartbreaker to Cheryl making a complete 11 track album that's compact, lyrically satisfying and worth a listen. Her writing on the songs is simple. The album is basically about love, winning it, keeping it, fighting for it and losing it. Slightly weak songwriting, but nevertheless pardonable for her debut effort. As one of the lead singers of Girls Aloud, she's got a decent vocal range, though not very strong. Coupled with an attractive face though, it's a good package. Her vocals are nothing extraordinary, but it sounds fresh and something to look out for. 3 Words has its own charm and Cole grows on you slowly, with her vocals and upbeat melodies falling somewhere between Beyonce, Mariah Carey and Rihanna.
