Femme Fatale
Britney SpearsBritney Spears' seventh studio album is a tribute to the bold, fancy-free and confident men and women of the world. It comes two years after Circus that sadly just managed to hit the right notes with fans. From beginning her career in 1999, the now matured and well-rounded Spears is professionally competing with peers like Rihaana, Lady Gaga, Kelis and others who make dance music. Going by this 12 song album, it seems she is once again making sure at least a few of the songs are No.1 hits. And they are. This time round, Spears has added the dub step to her sound, making it a mixture of dub and sugary pop dance groove. The once Disney star still captivates us with her image, style and vocal presence.
The album has been executively produced with Spears' long-time buddies Dr Luke and Max Martin. I Wanna Go is the big one here while Till The World Ends, Hold It Against Me and Criminal are perfect examples of sturdy, hook-heavy tracks. Full of dance grooves, Spears has chosen her lyrics well, even though none of them are penned by her. Other freaky pieces include Inside Out and How I Roll. Britney's vocals are a matter of comparing the newcomers with a teen who has graduated to being a pop princess. In Hold It Against Me, a mighty great song, Spears packs her vocals to a thrusting beat. In the high-energy Till The World Ends she brings on chants of "whoa oh oh oh ohhh" and some fierce and catchy vocals. These two songs give the start to the clubby album that stays up-tempo with the bubbly How I Roll to Trip To Your Heart, to low vocal range on Big Fat Bass, a jump-around dance track that has rapper will.i.am collaborating splendidly. Drop Dead Beautiful has an infectious beat and chorus, featuring female rapper Sabi, though not creating a very big impact. I Wanna Go has a bit of whistling while on Seal It With A Kiss Britney talks about a secret love for someone, with Gasoline featuring some slinky lyrics. There's no questioning her talent here, the diva delivers a fantastic pop album (includes a picture booklet inlay). ~ Verus Ferreira
