After 25 years of marriage, my mother wanted my father to make another woman feel special. She said to him, "I love you honey, but I know this other woman loves you a lot more than I do and I think she would like to spend some time with you."
When I asked my mother who the other woman was, she replied, "Your grandma dear. Who else could love your father the most just as I love you?"
My father has been very busy since the day he left his paternal home. The demands of his work and we three children had made it possible to visit grandma only occasionally. That night when mom was having a conversation with dad, he finally decided to visit her the coming weekend. On Friday night, all five of us embarked on a journey that was going to be etched in our memories forever, especially dad's. Next morning, at around 5:30 AM we reached grandma's house. As grandma lives with her eldest son, we thought of not disturbing anyone's sleep that early and waited until 6:30 AM when my grandma opened the door. I don't know how to explain the look on her face when she met dad. She looked extremely happy and at the same time, her eyes were moist. She turned back without saying a word and told us to come inside. We greeted everyone and had our breakfast. I saw dad going to grandma's room and followed him. I was just behind the door when I heard them talking. "Have you forgotten your mother, dear? I haven't seen you since ages and I felt like I would not be able to see you one more time before I die." "Don't say that, mom. You are as young as a teenager. Moreover, how can you even think that I have forgotten you? I love you so much that I always think about you. You remember that song you used to sing to me when I was a child. I listen to that song whenever I am tensed." "When are you returning?" "Tomorrow morning we will have to leave because on Monday I have a very important meeting." Grandma didn't say a word and then dad broke the silence, "Mom, why don't you come and live with us for a few days? You haven't gone to the city ever. We could spend some more time together." "You know, dear, that I can't leave this house. After your father's death, this is the only means of connection between us." "Okay, fine. Don't come with me but you will have to sing that song for me." Not a single mother can say no to such a request. She began to sing as dad put his head on her lap. After sometime grandma broke down and began to cry. Dad hugged and consoled her, "Mom, I love you." Grandma wiped away her tears and sang again. Soon both of them were asleep together. Next morning we returned to the city, to our usual robotic life. On our way back, mom asked dad, "So, how do you feel now?" Dad replied, "Much better. Thanks honey. I love you." After a few days, a call woke us up early in the morning. Dad picked up the receiver and said hello to which someone replied in a very heavy voice. "Anil, mom died of a massive heart attack. Please come as soon as possible." We rushed to the village house and performed the last rituals. Later, dad went to Grandma's room and sat on a chair when he suddenly saw a piece of paper on the nearby table. It said, "I love you, too, dear. I'm so happy that you came to see me. You'll never know what that meant to me. Now I can die in peace." At that moment, both dad and I understood the importance of saying in time: "I love you!" and to give our loved ones the time that they deserve. Nothing in life is more important than God and your family. Give them the time they deserve, because these things can't be put off until "some other time."
