Submission Guidelines

  • You must include your name, date of birth, home address/city/state/pin code, telephone number, e-mail and the name of your school/college on each submission. Most published pieces are fewer than 1,500 words.

  • Any work you submit may be published in The Teenager monthly print magazine and/or on our website. We don't return submissions, so keep a copy.

  • Label all work fiction or non-fiction. Be sure to include a title.

  • Include the following originality statement at the end of each submission: "I hereby certify that the above work is completely original," followed by your full name to affirm this is your work.

  • The Teenager has no deadlines. We accept submissions all year long. If, however, you are sending work that is holiday-specific, please try to get it in at least two months before the holiday.

  • Request anonymity. If due to the very personal nature of a piece you don't want your name published, we will respect your request, but you still must include name and address for our records.

  • Writing may be edited and we reserve the right to publish our edited version without your prior approval. We may not print your name on sensitive personal articles and in rare cases we may change names to protect individuals' identities.

  • All works submitted become the property of The Teenager and all copyrights are assigned to The Teenager. We retain the non-exclusive rights to publish all such works in any format. All material in The Teenager is copyrighted to protect us and to exclude others from republishing your work. However, all individual contributors retain the right to submit their work for publication elsewhere and you have our permission to do so.

  • For art and photographs, you can send a good photocopy or a scanned image by e-mail. To send artwork or photographs by e-mail attachment, scan items as a grayscale, line art or color file of at least 300 dpi and smaller than 10 mb when saved. Save all items as a JPEG, TIF (.tif) or BMP file, before sending as an attachment. We cannot return artwork, so please do not send an original.

  • Type all submissions, if possible otherwise print neatly in ink. If you send a stamped, self-addressed envelope with your submission, you will receive an acknowledgement. Be sure to read our submission guidelines and information on sending art and photos before you submit.

    Frequently Asked Questions
    Who decides what gets published?
Our editorial staff reviews all year. Every submission is read by at least one, usually two, editors and we pick the best of the best for each section of The Teenager's print magazine and website.

I sent something in a few months ago, but it hasn't been published. What should I do?
Because of the volume of submissions we get each year, we can only publish a fraction of them and we can't check to see if yours was received. Keep reading The Teenager (print and website) to see if your submission has appeared. Of course, sending us more of your work increases your chances of getting published!

Are some kinds of submissions more likely to get published?
We look for a variety of work by writers from across the country. Some sections, like Travel, Environment and Fashion have considerably fewer submissions, so there is less competition to get published. Poetry has the most submissions. Most published pieces are fewer than 1,500 words.

What are The Teenager's editorial categories? Do I have to pick a category?
The categories are: Art, Poetry, Fiction, Sports, Opinion, Fashion, Non-fiction (Travel and Culture, Environment, Your Health, Teen Heroes), Reviews (books, movies, music, TV, websites, video games), College Essays and Articles, and Interviews. You don't have to pick a category for your submission, but you must tell us if it is fiction, non-fiction or a college essay.

What kind of artwork can I send?
You can send photocopies or high-quality photographs of any kind of artwork, including oil and watercolour paintings, sculpture, collage, computer graphics and much more! If you choose to send your original artwork or photographs, remember that we can't return them.

How will I know if I get published?
If you are published in The Teenager's monthly print magazine or website, you'll receive a letter from us, and a copy of the issue. If you're published on our website you will receive an e-mail notification.

Who will see my work if it is published?
The Teenager's print magazine goes to hundreds of thousands of teens, parents and teachers across the country. Lots of adults receive the print edition too, including celebrities. And, of course, anyone could see your writing and artwork on this website.
